COPS were doing a normal stop and search at 1am yesterday morning when they got a shock.
They discovered that a taxi, which is supposed to carry 22 passengers, had 57 people in it.
Most of the passengers in the vehicle that stopped at the Kranskop tollgate on the N1 outside Modimolle, Limpopo, were illegal immigrants from Malawi.
A driver (38) from Zimbabwe was bust and fined R6 800 for overloading.
He might also be charged with transporting illegal immigrants and his taxi was impounded by the Modimolle traffic cops.
The taxi was travelling from Musina to Joburg.
Limpopo police spokeswoman Constable Maphure Manamela confirmed that 57 undocumented foreigners, including the taxi driver, were bust yesterday morning.
“They’ll appear in the Modimolle Magistrates Court to face a charge of illegal immigration.”
- Meanwhile, six people died in a crash between a Kia and a Ford at the Modimolle Mountain on Friday.
This came just over a week after 26 people died in an accident on the same spot.
