MUSICIAN Morena Monethi (21) was over the moon when he got his first gig.
But he never made it to the stage because he was stabbed to death on his way to the venue.
He was attacked in Newtown last month, allegedly by a group of men driving in two cars.
He died in hospital the day after his attack.
Morena’s brutal murder was captured by CCTV cameras in the Joburg CBD. The footage is currently being studied by the police.
It has now emerged that one of the men identified in the footage is a well-known thug who has been terrorising residents.
According to the Morena family, the man was known for assaulting people and allegedly worked with hitmen.
He and another suspect were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder.
The police pounced on the well-known suspect as he was leaving the Joburg Magistrates Court, where he was appearing in an assault case opened by his ex-girlfriend.
Morena was studying sound engineering part-time while working at a sneaker laundry business.
Family friend Nomsa Radebe said at the time of the incident, Morena was walking in the street with three friends, who managed to escape.
“The footage broke our hearts. Morena and his friend were kicked and beaten while alcohol was poured over them.”
Police spokesman Captain Xoli Mbele said Mthokosizi Mhlongo and Foster Makabelo, both 37, had appeared in the Joburg Magistrates Court.
Mbele said the case was postponed for bail applications to be made.
