Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth is confident that the national team can reach the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals in Egypt.

The biennial tournament will start on June 21 and ends on July 19.

South Africa will kick-off their campaign against Ivory Coast next week Monday. They will also meet Morocco and Namibia in their group.

The 42-year-old played for Bafana on 28 occasions and also scored one goal. He also represented the Under-20 team 18 times and the Under-23 side 35 times.

He was part of Bafana team at the Afcon tournament in Mali in 2002, but never got to play. He believes Bafana have improved under coach Stuart Baxter.

There has been a lot of criticism on the selection of Kaizer Chiefs defenders Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Daniel Cardoso.

The duo had a poor season for the under-performing Chiefs team last season, but Booth understands why they were selected in the Afcon squad.

Booth was also surprised with the non-inclusion of two players Thapelo Morena and Vincent Pule.

The Mamelodi Sundowns versatile player Morena has been in tremendous form for the Premier Soccer League champions locally and also on the continent, while Orlando Pirates attacker Pule has been creating and scoring goals throughout the season.
