PRUDENCE Khuzwayo (49) is lucky to be alive after she was attacked and badly bitten by five dogs on Monday.
Prudence from Illovo, south of Durban, said she was only a few metres away from the house where she works as a domestic worker when she saw five dogs on the road running towards her.
She said the dogs pulled her down and bit her all over her body.
“I screamed and tried to hit them with my handbag, but a dog grabbed it while another one continued to bite me,” she said.
Fortunately, a motorist stopped his car and chased away the dogs, thought to be bull terriers, and took her to their owner.
The owner took her to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital and gave her R200 and left.
“I don’t know what the money was for. Perhaps the owner thinks it’s compensation,” said Prudence.
She said she was treated and discharged the same day but is still in pain.
Tracey Girling of the SPCA in Illovo Beach said they would take action against the owner.
She said she was in contact with the victim and was waiting for police to help her open a case before the SPCA could put down the dogs.
Prudence said: “I want the dogs put down immediately.
“Action must be taken against the owner for failing to lock up his pets.”
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said Prudence needed to open a case.
