A resident was returning from work on Wednesday night when he stumbled upon what he thought was a pile of rocks.
But then he ran into the kasi shouting that he had found a mountain of potatoes.
Residents rushed to the spot with wheelbarrows, bags and bakkies to get their hands on the potatoes had been dropped off next to the R50 road that connects Mpumalanga with Gauteng.
Some even fashioned their clothes into bags so they could grab as many potatoes as possible.
But now Metro cops want to know who dropped off the potatoes.
Ekurhuleni Metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said: “The officers were concerned about the safety of the people picking up the potatoes next to a provincial road at that hour of the night.
“Investigations are underway to trace the people responsible for this illegal dumping.
“We also want to determine the reasons for the careless disposal of the goods on the side of the road.”
