At an exclusive listening session on Thursday night, South Africans were the first to hear the new Fifa World cup anthem, Colour, by Jason Derulo ft Cassper Nyovest. The Mafikeng-born rapper had travelled to LA to record the song at Jason Derulo’s house, where he experienced a warm welcome.
“Going to Jason’s house, I didn’t know what to expect. He owns a big compound and there’s security everywhere. His studio is the size of half my crib and he had his chef cook for us and I got to work with his producer and my producer Ali Keys.”
As part of the project, Cassper got to travel to Mozambique with the Coca-Cola team to showcase the Fifa World Cup trophy.
“I got to see the actual trophy for the first time. The moment was greater than I had imagined it would be,” he tells DRUM. “This is the trophy that travelled the world and this is what people fight for on the field.”
Cassper says seeing the trophy brought back memories of when South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010. “Seeing the trophy reminded me of 2010 and how broke I was at the time; I was mad broke and still living in the hood. I wish I could go as the person I am today and see some of the games.”
Happy to have been part of a big project like this, Cassper says he didn’t think the collaboration would materialise.
“It is a big opportunity for me. Just to be associated with Coke is an honour because it is one of the biggest brands in the world. For them to pick me to be part of the World Cup shows that I am moving in the right direction.”
On the track, which is set for release on 16 March, Cassper freestyles his verse. “I wanted to capture the moment. My verse was not written down and none of the lyrics were pre-planned,” he says.
The 2018 Fifa World Cup kicks off on 14 June in Russia.
